Paul Kalkbrenner while his performance at Gasmaschinenzentrale Unterwellenborn

So you want to be a DJ? Get DJ gear wisely
DJ mixing equipment

DJs rule the world. They fly from city to city in clandestine private jets, indulging in white leather luxury, as adoring fans crowd the dance floor to get a glimpse of their favourite superstar DJ. Bodies glisten in the heat; fists triumphantly pump in unison while the crowd heaves to the relentless beat. So how do you become a part of this exciting world?

Well first up you need some DJ gear. While back in the day the ultimate DJ gear set up consisted of two Technics turntables and a mixer but now things have become somewhat more sophisticated. The industry standard is now Pioneer whose CD decks and mixers are the weapons of choice for most DJs and nightclubs with many features on offer. Multimedia inputs, midi mapping and special effects like 'phase', 'trans', 'delay', 'filter', 'crush' and 'roll' a sampling repeat effect that can add a new dimension to tracks.

These effects can be applied to existing tracks to make new sounds and interpretive versions of the original music. These days DJs only have to turn up with a USB stick, a pair of headphones and they're ready to rock a crowd. Furthermore you are now able to synchronise up with software programs like Traktor and Mixvibes to create personalised sets and remixes. But wait a moment; we are getting ahead of ourselves. How do you go about securing the best value DJ gear available? Cheap DJ gear might not always be the best option but on the other hand expensive top of the line gear might not always be the best immediate solution either. Do you stick with a brand name like Pioneer or perhaps look at other more affordable brands that may offer similar features like American Audio or Gemini. If you are looking to buy DJ gear then you will need to do some research and this is where you can really save money.

First up however the type of gear required is often dictated by the type and style of music are you playing. This will determine what type of equipment is needed. If you love hip-hop and rap perhaps a scratching set up is warranted. Are you playing vinyl or CDs or other types of digital media? The mixer of choice for scratch DJs will usually have a bulletproof cross fader with curve adjustment. Perfect for scratching up a storm and dropping beats. For those playing house or trance a mixer with effects and high sound quality is usually most desired. Whatever DJ gear is needed whether in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Ibiza, more research is required. There are plenty of DJ forums and websites out there that prove invaluable when buying any type of DJ gear, from 'old school' (Technics turntables) through to 'new school' state of the art equipment (Pioneer CDJ2000s).

          ]]>

The old school crowd regard turntables as being the highest level of art using 2, 3 or sometimes 4 turntables to produce staggering layered mixes. Carl Cox was well renowned for his 4 turntable 8-hour sets. Scratch DJs on the other hand like Q-Bert typically use 2 turntables and construct new sounds from existing vinyl sound bites. Q-Bert even went on to design his very own Vestax QFO turntable complete with built in mixer. Digital DJs tend to stand more in the producer end of town having more control over variables, and as such are able to get more technically creative in the mix. A lot of the challenge in using turntables has been taken away in the digital world, even for something as simple as beat matching. Digital DJs experience the luxury of having sampled sound bites automatically beat matched, pitch shifted and synchronised all at the touch of a few buttons. This enables DJs to really get inside their gear and use a vast array of effects and transitions to create mind-boggling world-class mixes and mash-ups.

Having some knowledge of the types of media i.e. vinyl versus digital, the style of your music and how you are going to deliver your set now allows us to discuss the all amount selection of DJ gear. First I would advise to set a budget. While a minimum quality level is recommended you need to set a budget that sits within your skill level. There are some terrific set-ups out there for well under 00. At the other extreme two Pioneer CDJ2000s, a Pioneer DJM2000, software package and laptop could easily crack the ,000 mark. Even the more affordable setups can offer you the same features and functionality of the higher priced name brands. There are plenty of DJ businesses that offer rehearsal studios (DJ booths) where you can practice with professional gear or you can attend a DJ school and pick a course that most suits the direction and style of music that interests you.

There are stories of underground DJs that labour in their bedrooms or in DJ booths for many hours before coming out to wow the crowd at the DMCs or other similar competitions, thus catapulting them to the top of the talent pool. Ideally playing experience provides skill and it might be case of working your way up the set list to get better and better gigs. Of course it helps to have a good few hundred friends on Facebook as crowd pulling power incentivises promoters to book DJs for gigs.

Forums are the best place to start looking. DJ gear manufacturers also have their own forums such as forums.pioneerdj.com by Pioneer. While these are obviously going to be slanted in a positive light, posts will often reveal first hand knowledge about the whys and wherefores of the various types of equipment. Features, benefits and how they relate to you the end user. Remember if searching on Google or similar make sure you use intuitive search topics. And remember a search engine like Google offers paid keywords for retailers and manufacturers wanting to appear at the top of the searches as sponsored advertising. In other words try and ensure you are reading neutral information as opposed to sponsored information.

If a website is more about paid advertising links and out of date posts you are probably on the wrong site. Before purchasing any gear, try and make sure the outlet has a good reputation in the market and make sure they have been in the market a decent period of time. If they carry most of the major brands such as Pioneer, Technics, Numark, Gemini, American Audio, Vestax, Allen and Heath, Traktor, Mixvibes etc, then they should be OK. Discuss with the sales person all of the points mentioned above with regard to the music you are playing, vinyl vs. digital, software etc and get some options. Remember knowledge is power so the more research and discussion you undertake, the better informed decision you will make and leading you to ultimately become the superstar DJ you want to be.

DJ mixing equipment question by me: What beginner DJ equipment should I buy and do I need to take a class to learn how to DJ?
I just went to a concert (bfd) and saw DJ A.M., Mastercraft, and Moby, and I was amazed how much fun it was. Now, I'm interested in getting into DJing as a hobby, but I don't know where to start or what equipment to buy. What kind of equipment should I buy (i.e. turntables), for a reasonable price and that I can (preferably) play using songs off my computer or mp3 player? And, can I teach myself how to start mixing or is it worth while to take a class on DJing?

DJ mixing equipment best answer:

Answer by Talizzle what?!!
Man DJ AM is THE MAN. I love him, he's like my idol in djing!!

Ok so get into Djing if you trully have a passion for music, not because it's cool being a dj. So, I don't know what music genres you're into but you must basically know everything about every good song of the latest 10 to 20 years (or more depending on the music genre). And ALWAYS manage to have the newest stuff. Once you've got the music, you've got maybe 40 to 50% at least of the job done. Believe me, you can be an incredible mixer, scratcher, but if people don't like the music, they will not dance and therefore will not be happy. So after that you gotta get yourself some dj gear. I would suggest sticking to turntables if you're into Hip-hop/R&B and cd players if you're into House/Techno. Other than that, get a small package (where you get 2 turntables/cd players, a mixer and a pair of headphones) to start with. And start practicing, and practicing. Practice as much as you can. And once you think you're starting to become good at it, practice some more. That's how you should get started. Then once you think you're ready to start djing at some parties, contact me and I'll help you out!!
And no, taking classes is like 80% useless because it's all about practicing. Though maybe you can take like 1 or 2 classes just so they'll show you how a song is built (32 bars, BPM) and like how you plug a turntable with a mixer. But take my advice: use that money to get yourself better gear once you improved.

Welcome to your new hobby!

DJ Equipment For The Aspiring DJ
DJ mixing equipment

For people that want to pursue an interest in DJing the best way is to get some DJ equipment and practice mixing some songs and compiling mixes of your favourite skills. The best way to learn is to try and fortunately there is a great deal of affordable equipment that is making DJing accessible to a wide range of people. For the beginner knowing what equipment to get and how much to spend on each item of equipment can be difficult.

There are certain items of equipment that are worth spending money on and certain items of equipment that you can make drastic savings on without necessarily losing a great deal of quality. This being the case it is difficult to know where to start if you are new to DJing. The best thing that you can do is to read as much as you possibly can about DJ equipment. Once you have a rough idea of what you are after then set yourself a budget.

Once you have set yourself a budget you can attack the internet with the intention of buying the kit and this is where you can research the best items. The internet will enable you to compare prices from thousands of different companies and as a result you will be able to find great deals on DJ equipment if you look carefully.

          ]]>

Playing device

The first thing that you need to get is a playing device from which you can play your chosen music. There are a number of different types of playing device and your choice will depend on a number of different things. You may be looking to play your vinyl collection in which case a vinyl record player is essential. If you are looking to DJ using CDs then you will need a CD player and finally if you are looking to DJ using MP3 tracks then you will need a device that can store and play these digital files. Most DJs will utilise two playing devices and these can be used together.

This usually means that the DJ can cue up a song to play after the initial song has finished. This can enable the DJ to mix tracks seamlessly so that the music continues without a noticeable pause. This is obviously a great thing for DJs that want to keep a crowd dancing and it is an indication of the quality of the DJ when the tracks can be matched seamlessly.

Amps and Speakers

Once you have a playing device you will need to find something to play your music through. You need an amp and speakers to make the sound loud enough for your audience. There are a vast range of different speakers on the market and the general rule is that when you purchase speakers you get what you pay for. The more expensive speakers are invariably better quality and as a result it can be a difficult area to save money on. That being said you can get a reasonably good set of speakers without breaking the bank and they are a very simple item to update in the future if you manage to save more money.

Headphones

Headphones are a key item of DJ equipment as they allow the DJ to listen to the track that they are preparing whilst the track that is playing can be heard by the crowd. As a result it is important to find a headphone that completely cuts out ambient noise. This means that it is much better to avoid in-ear headphones. Headphones are worth investing in so spend a bit of money for a good pair and you can keep the same pair for the rest of your career.

12 Tips For Selecting The Right Ohio Wedding DJ Company
DJ mixing equipment

12 Tips For Selecting The Right Ohio Wedding DJ Company

Your Ohio Wedding DJ should have the talent to announce & coordinate your wedding reception. Make sure to find out what type of style M.C. he is. Some are loud and cheesy while others are professional and know how to keep things moving without the focus being on themselves. After all your big wedding day is all about you and your husband or wife. A great DJ will keep the focus on you and keep your event running smoothly all night, allowing you and your partner to relax and enjoy yourselves.

A great DJ has the ability to carry out traditional wedding ceremonies like the Father-Daughter Dance, First Dance and so on..,while at the same time giving you some new ideas for your wedding reception. How about a Dollar Dash instead of the Dollar Dance? Maybe a choreographed dance routine for the entire Bridal Party? A great DJ is also a well organized wedding planner with the ability to help you plan out your exactly as you would like.

The best can create high quality sound while at the same time being able to correct any problems that may occur. Experience is a must with this category.

          ]]>

A well rounded DJ has the ability to set the mood of an event just by using various lighting effects. Uplighting, Monogram Lighting, and pinspots to name the most popular for Ohio Weddings. Ask to see photos of past weddings in which your Ohio Wedding DJ has used these effects. Uplighting has become one of the more popular effects for wedding receptions. An experienced DJ and Lighting Technician will be able to set the lights to any color you desire. This means your Ohio Wedding DJ can match the lighting to the colors or theme of your event.

Ability to sense the mood and determine the age, culture, and musical tastes of the crowd. The music played should reflect this. A great DJ will know to mix it up with the many music styles for diverse groups that you will see at most weddings.

Ability to improvise and go with the flow. Weddings can be unpredictable at times and a great Wedding DJ will be able to adapt and make quick changes if they are needed.

A reputable Ohio Wedding DJ Company will provide the Bride and Groom with a wedding planner, with details from start to finish of your wedding reception. Great DJ's will offer advice and recommendations but never stear from the vision of the Bride and Groom.

Your Ohio Wedding DJ should have be able to keep a dance floor full for most of the night. DJs that are great at mixing the music WILL have more success with keeping people on the dance floor. A great Ohio Wedding DJ can keep the music flowing, beatmixing and moving seamlessly all night.

A DJ company should have music for all types of crowds and musical tastes. Professional will have monthly subscriptions to major music suppliers just like the radio stations use. They can provide music from the 1920's to Current.

A professional mobile DJ company will be able to provide Brides and Grooms with premium sound systems and high end wedding lighting equipment. Cheap mobile DJ systems and professional grade mobile DJs systems are not even comparable. You really do get what you pay for in the electronics industry. Make sure your is using quality equipment. You wouldn't trust a Wedding Photographer to walk around and take great pictures with a cheap throw away camera would you? Just like you shouldn't trust a DJ that uses low end entry level equipment.

- A good can encourage the audience to participate in dancing and other events while not being to overbearing and aggresive.

- There should be no problem at all with your DJ working and coordinating all the important events that will take place at your Ohio Wedding Reception. An experienced DJ will communicate with all vendors making sure everything runs smoothly ensuring you and your guests memories to last a lifetime! The tips are courtesy of Drew with www.Light-Up-My-Wedding.com. Please visit our site for more information as well as pictures and videos of whats possible when choosing the right

DJ mixing equipment question by SillyBlack: Learning to Dj, advice on equipment and job opportunities.?
thanks so much for your help

DJ mixing equipment best answer:

Answer by indrid cold
Yes vinyl is absolutely still a viable option, and it's just good to learn to know how to spin on decks. It is still what I prefer, but I have a digital set up too, so you can always expand on your original turntables.

But if you had to go one OR the other... it really is up to you. One of the benefits of digital I will admit though is the weight savings.

I would recommend Technics 1200 turntables. They just feel richer and warmer than their digital counterparts. They're the industry standard because of their excellent sound quality and bullet proof build. You can spin records, mix, scratch and just listen to vinyl on them. You'll need a mixer to plug the turntables into. The mixer controls the levels of the turntables, through gain, volume, and eq (equalizer: high/mids/lows), as well as the fader which selects between the two turntables. the main fader is usually horizontal. If its in the middle you'll hear both turntables equally and as you slide it towards the left you'll hear the left table more and as you slide it to the right, the right side will sound more. This is used primarily for mixing and scratching. (you can also use the volume level fader, which are the vertical faders for this also)

There's a lot of flexibility with the old school decks, even if you want to go digital, through digitally encoded vinyl, like Rane's Serato and Stanton's Final Scratch, which allow you to plug in your laptop to your mixer and play and manipulate your mp3's just like vinyl. You can rewind, fast forward, stop, start, queue, and scratch the mp3 file. You control the sound file through the digitally encoded vinyl, and when you want to throw on a "real" vinyl record, just take off the digitally encoded record and swap it with your "real" vinyl record.
---(one of the benefits of this setup as it allows me to save on weight.... carrying a laptop vs. several crates of vinyl)

CD players are also an option, such as the pioneer cdj 1000, cdj800. I would recommend the CDJ1000 and CDJ800's from experience as far as CD players go, these would probably be considered the industry standard or Technics 1200's of CD players, as these are most likely the CD players that most clubs and venues will have set up.

The good thing now is that because of online auctions, you can find a used technic 1200's for the price of a new lower end deck. I've known people who were tempted with wanting to save $ and bought the cheaper deck, even a belt drive deck.... only to end up buying the 1200's anyway.

Equipment: ebay is a great place to start.

--again, i'd recommend a good set Technics 1200. always good to know how to beat match on the original wheels of steel.

--MIXER - best you can afford, stay with tried and established quality manufacturers, numark, stanton, and even gemini now have decent setups for not much $ . you can always upgrade later. (If you've got the money or find a good deal go with Rane, Allen Heath, Vestax, or Pioneer)

--HEADPHONES - any good quality closed large style headphones (if you've got the money pioneer hdj 1000s, sony mdr700, sennheiser's)

--CARTRIDGES/STYLUS - you really don't want to scrimp here. I use and recommend ortofon silver, excellent sound quality and accurate tracking w/o excessive wear on the vinyl.

--RECORDS/VINYL

--AMP/SPEAKERS/MONITORS - I'd personally go with active speakers or monitors, which means its got the amp built into the speaker. it's less gear over all. but you can always get an amp and separate speakers or monitors.
-------
I'd stay away from the starter kits w/ of fbrand turntables or cd players and shoddy mixers, or the all in one consoles,

--again w/ DJ equipment and really all pro audio equipment, you really do get what you pay for so i'd stick with tried and trued names with solid reputations. it really will help save you money and headaches in the long run.

good luck.

DJ mixing equipment question by Ryan: Trying to learn to DJ, and I am looking at buying some equipment?
Hey I am trying to learn how to DJ. I really love House music and I am trying to learn how to mix and maybe set up my own beats. Experimenting mainly. I went to my local guitar center and they suggested the VCI 300 of the Hercules RMX. Any suggestions? I am a complete beginner and there is a 300 dollar difference between the two. I hope someone can help me on what equipment to get and how to start of my learning experience.

DJ mixing equipment best answer:

Answer by Aman B
If you are truly serious about leaning. Go buy a set of turntables. it will be the best investment ever. Don't do CDJ or any PC interface. all you need are 2 turntables, a mixer and a few records

You can pick up a pair of Technics 1200's and a mixer for around 1000 if you look properly. it is the best way to learn about it. I started out with a pair of crappy tables and have switched my DJ rig 3 times since then and absolutely love it.

From Your Bedroom to Ibiza - DJ Apprenticeship
DJ mixing equipment

We all know that for the majority of us, music is an expression of how we feel or experience that might have arisen in the past.

In Great Britain with street crime at an all time high, troubled youths and kids roaming around most street corners and squares, home never feels safer.

Studies show that the majority of these male or even female youths when put in a room with some decks, mixers and pumping pa equipment find it is a way of letting their built up anger, frustration and plain boredom out in a form of weird and wonderful mixes or noise for some.

These days you can easily get equipment at much affordable prices and with the boom in computer software that allows for creative mixing without the need for hardware such as record decks, cdplayers or mixers.

With this software the djis in full control of all parameters of equalization and is able to load mp3 files from the computer where most people will have a large archive of songs.

Does this mean the end of vinyl mixing? Since the development of dj cd players that can simulate vinyl mixing and allow for the much cheaper format of the cd to be used rather than bulky and expensive vinyl it appears that while there are a few purists out there the majority of djs have changed to cd mixing.

          ]]>

Now available on the market are usb controllers to manipulate software available which widens the gap even further by keeping the cost of dj equipment down since everything is software controlled. With the software you can scratch, loop, effect, reverse and even change the tempo without changing pitch....

This is far more than can be achieved with traditional equipment and also with less space being taken up. It's not surprising then that a shift in the purchase of vinyl decks and cd players for bedroom djs was going to happen. In effect the bedroom dj has never had so good with cost and space being reduced to minimum.

With the growth of sites such as Myspace the bedroom dj now has an outlet for promoting the music being produced and is even capable created a weblog to document their development. Podcasting has been another innovation with the dj able to create his or her own radio station to be uploaded and shared with an online community.

Advances in technology have ensured you can watch and learn about the equipment from your own home, this means expensive tuition is no longer needed and for those looking for a real career in music there are many different opportunities available and whats more these are developed from your own bedroom.

Also there have been huge reductions in the cost of equipment ever the past five yours with most of the DJ products now being manufactured in China instead of Japan, again this ensures that it is not just within the grasp of the well off homes but now any child can shape their destiny.

The new age means that computer interaction is very much a part of school life and the new kit interacts completely with the home computer. USB devices are plug and play and almost anything musical or for that matter visual can now be controlled and enhanced from your desktop or laptop.

Over the next few years the world of music will have a new breed of expertise, the dj, the lighting technician and the mixing technician will be people who started off in their bedroom. Places such as Ibiza and nightclubs around the world will be the destinations for these kids, even radio and television and of course the world is truly their oyster.

What DJ Equipment Do You Really Need?
DJ mixing equipment

A DJ is by nature a technician, using his skills with a wide variety of DJ equipment in order to ensure that an audience has only the finest and the freshest beats as it parties the night away. Sometimes, though, the shear amount of DJ equipment available you can be overwhelming for someone just trying to break into the game. Here are the absolute basics you need to get started.

The most basic piece of DJ equipment you need is, naturally, music. While you can still use CDs, and some DJs are quite partial to vinyl because you can "scratch" it to create new beats, at an introductory level you probably want to go with something off an mp3 player. This way, you will not have to fumble around with physical CDs, and a change in music is as simple as clicking through a menu. If you do decide you want to use CDs or vinyl, though, you will need two of each (two CD players or two turntables) in order make smooth transitions between songs.

The next most basic item of DJ equipment you need is something to play the music loud enough so that everyone in a large hall can hear it (and at a close range, can hear nothing else) - namely, speakers. You will want to buy speakers that are specifically for use by DJs in playing pre-recorded music rather than live music, ones that will work well with monitoring systems and mixers.

          ]]>

While its not absolutely essential to a DJs job of playing music, the microphone is nonetheless an indispensable piece of DJ equipment. It will allow you to easy interact with the audience, get them exited and encourage them to dance if they cannot seem to do so themselves. Remember that the DJ is in charge of creating a party atmosphere, and music is not the only way to do this.

Now that you have the basics, it is time to get into your first DJ-exclusive DJ equipment, the DJ mixer. This will is an audio mixing console, a device that lets control things like sound level, rooting, and timbre, among other things. What makes the DJ mixer specifically a piece of DJ equipment is that it includes a crossfader, which allows for smooth transitions between songs in order to keep the flow of music to the crowd constant and vibrant.

A piece of DJ equipment that goes hand in hand with the DJ mixer is a set of headphones. Unlike a regular audio mixing console, a DJ mixer allows you to feed a track not currently being played to a set of headphones, which allows you to sample the tracks you want without disturbing anyone in your audience

If, after you have gathered all this equipment, you still have some money to burn, you might want to consider investing in a Sequencer. This handy piece of DJ equipment runs on a computer, and allows you to mix MIDI sound with Digital Audio, which can be used to dramatically change the sound of a song, allowing you to create practically original music on the spot.

There are countless other pieces of DJ equipment you can purchase, such as samplers, vinyl emulation software and drum machines. But if you have these basic pieces, you should be well on your way to being DJ.

Mix music-how to find the best equipment
DJ mixing equipment

I don't know if you are like me. I am just a person who loves to be in club enjoying what the djs' offers for the weekend. A club is where I get to make friends within thirty minutes. A club is where I get to release off my anger, frustrations and enjoy what the music power gives in. But I have also discovered that it's not one time or twice when I have this' it think I can do better than this dj.' I don't know if you have ever been in such a situation. The best known djs' who mix music and the crowd are firing up are those that turn o be lucrative pastime. The good thing with this profession is that most of those djs' have other thing to attend to during the day and will resume their loved talent only for the night hours.

One determinant of how best a certain dj is the instruments which he uses. No matter how a dj may be good in mixing music, as long as the instruments are not initializing with the same, then be sure the crowd will lower that dj-no matter what. Even if most of the dj equipment are expensive to buy, ensure that you buy one instrument at a time. This will accommodate you time to budget yourself slowly. Ensure that you have quality mixing system that no other neighboring dj can afford. Wirth that only, you of course gain some skills ahead of your competing djs'. The unfortunate thing is that most of these djs' can afford to stand for the quality. They usually compromise on quality for the sake of price and thus they buy a ‘set' of instruments which are worth nothing.

          ]]>

When the dj wants to mix music for kick back, you here note surprising or enticing to your eras. This makes most of the crowd become bored few minutes after entering club where they thought they would have a great time to release their anger, tiredness and the like issues, buy you realize that you will end up having more of what you were avoiding by the time you are out of the club, simply because someone didn't let time to have what is required to carry out his profession seriously. Am not saying that it is a must you buy expensive dj equipments for the sake of a good music mixing. But it makes sense that most of the djs' who have a reputation, if you check their equipments; it tells you all of what we are talking about.

Portability: as much as we have talks of price, the second thing you need to evaluate is the nature of your services. If you are one of the djs' who are called from one place to the other; today you are here and in the next twenty eight hours you are having a function at some twenty five kilometers from where you performed last, then you need to consider the portability of your equipments. To help you with this, you can speak to your fellow djs' and try to learn how that can be possible and how they move their machines when they have these functions. With that, when you are buying the machines, you will have an idea to tell the seller of the machines which are easily portable and which will ensure that no matter where you are, you can mix music awesomely.

Easy to Grasp Tips For Learning How To DJ
DJ mixing equipment

So, you want to be a DJ? Welcome to a very exclusive club of individuals. Nobody better understands a DJ like another DJ. We have our own language and way of expressing ourselves. Having said that, we’re not against picking up a few tips and pointers that will help along the way. In this article, I’m going to identify a few of those tips that you might want to take to heart.

At the very top of my list is what I call to “be geared up.” This doesn’t mean to have all the equipment that you need. It means to have backups, just in case. For example, when you go out on a gig, make sure you carry a spare needle with you. How come? What happens if the only one you have goes south on you? Then what? Always hope for the best and expect the worst. That way, if something DOES go wrong, you’ll be ready for it.

          ]]>

As far as the actual gig itself, there are loads of tips I could give but this one is probably the most important…keep them dancing. You DON’T want to have any down time of silence whatsoever. Obviously, in order to do this, you need to have everything planned from the outset. There is no time for thinking in between tracks. If you get requests, comply with them ONLY if doing so isn’t going to meddle with your set. Nobody is going to expect you to have every song created, though a good-sized collection is not a bad idea.

Finally, don’t annihilate your sound system. I understand that the music has to be loud, but you don’t want to play things at a volume that blows every speaker in the setup. Having to fill the night with beat boxing is not a very good idea. So pick a level that is going to get the job done without turning the event into a nightmare. I’ll leave the level itself up to YOUR good judgment. I trust that you’ll know just where to leave the volume at.

There is a fine art to being a DJ. It isn’t just about spinning records and scratching. It’s about bringing an object to life. You want to keep things bouncing and make people feel the energy. You want them to go home, in the end, having had a good time. That’s the end goal.

In my signature, you’ll find a review of a great resource that will turn you into a dope DJ in record time.

DJ mixing equipment question by Miami305: DJ equipment...whats the best?
I usually mix music on my computer, i've been doing it for a couple of years so i'm not new at mixing music.
I'm just money tight.
So I want to know what is the cheapest (and wont break down) Dj equipment I should get?
Pioneer? Numark? Actual turntables? or CDJs?
And what should I expect to spend?

DJ mixing equipment best answer:

Answer by miserable old git
Depends on what you want to do - personally I don't get the point of mixing CDs- you might as well do it on a computer. Proper turntables, on the other hand, open you up to a whole new array of talents - scratching, beat juggling, etc - Its more hands on and fun, too.
Best in my experience is Vestax (especially for scratching) and Technics. Numark do good stuff but are terrible when it comes to repairs or replacement parts.
If you want to go cheap you can get a DJ in a box set - Two belt drives and a basic mixer for 150 to 200 pounds (in England).
If you want more professional kit brand new you'll end up spending anything from 300 to a grand - excluding amps etc.
